The actual gameplay part starts at the house of this boy’s uncle who has been missing for quite some time. The story is about an adventure this man had back when he was very young. “A Story About My Uncle” opens with a father telling a bedtime to story to his daughter. So if you don't like platformers, this game may not be for you. Especially 3D platformers, those are just amazing. And I'm glad I did.īefore I start, you should know I absolutely love platformers and will generally always enjoy them unless they're horribly bad. It had been sitting on my wishlist forever and I really wanted to try it out, so I did. We all love Steam Summer Sale right? I mean, games with like 75% discounts and all that, who doesn’t love games with a discount? So when I saw this game was at a huge discount, I just had to buy it. What more could a guy ask for from a game? A good game, but wont be anyone's favourite.Ĭave systems, cave monsters, villages filled with frog people. Its about 3 hours long, less if you are good at platforming, and the story is entertaining but leaves no impression of you once you are done. Its heartwarming in a certain way, even if it feels underdeveloped and secundary to the gameplay. Which is odd considering how whimsical and juvenile the story. This is alleviated by the frequente use of checkpoints, but even then it can be a bit frustrating in certain sections. A good thing because the game can get damn hard at times when it commands the player to use all their learned abilities in sucession. I suspect that the game uses very letinient hitboxes for this to happen, but it was the right decision. The 3d platformer is done through a grappling hook and later in the game a jetpack, and it works off really well considering how often first person platforming tends to fail because of the decreased perception of the players own body. Given the game’s title, I was expecting a strong story, but I felt it didn’t really go anywhere.Ī Story About My Uncle is essencial a 3d first person platformer with some whimsical story sprinkled in. The game is probably about the right length without becoming tedious or forcing extra mechanics. The final sections are very tricky and it becomes less obvious where you need to go next. In the latter stages, the checkpoints are further apart, so will need to do a few sections before reaching a checkpoint. You are basically returned to the last platform. You need enough momentum to cover large gaps, so you need to time the release of your grapple to ensure you have the correct angle and distance.įor the most part, checkpoints are frequent so there’s no frustration when you plummet to your death. Small islands, moving platforms, moving rocks to grapple onto. The game is basically a series of obstacle courses. Initially you can only grapple once before landing on a surface, but as you play, this is upgraded up to 3 times. Soon, you discover a grapple ability which allows you to pull yourself towards a surface. With your suit, you can run fast and jump extremely high. You start off in a house, pick up a suit and then are transported to a strange world.
